Where did it all start?
Where did it all start?
The start of my teaching abroad journey.
Writing a blog can be awkward, you want to share yourexperience but most of it has already happened, and you really need to post consistently, say weekly, so you can keep up with everything that is happening.
The most I can say is I will try.
I will try to keep you up to date as well as posting retrospectively so you know the whole story.
14th Jan 2026;
I’ve wanted to move abroad, specifically South East Asia,think, Japan, Thailand, Cambodia etc for the longest time.
Back in 2012 I married my long term high school sweetheart –ok that makes us sound American. We weren’t! Think 16 year olds in the early 2000’s, rocking out to Limp Bizkit, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Papa Roach; the list is endless. Needless to say underage drinking in the notorious rock/metal venue that is Nottingham’s "Rock City" ensued.
Anyway, after 27 years of growing up in the UK we both feltthere could be better things for us in Japan, we loved Tokyo and had visited twice before.
For the sake of getting a spousal visa we thought ‘fuck it’let’s get married, that will solve the problem. He got a job teaching English in Japan, I was having trouble securing a position, with no teaching experience, a spotty career so far, flourished with a ridiculous amount of A-levels and half completed Psychology degree’s and then a degree in Graphic Design, I obviously had no clue of the direction I was headed.
We did it, and then it all fell apart, after a few days, theex professed how the position that he expected and the one that was before him was not the same. After much heartbreak and tears we returned home, after a week in Japan, exhausted and drained.
Almost 15 years later & I’m single and ‘living thedream’.
Living the dream is an awkward concept, if you are anythinglike me you will know; that once we get to ‘the dream’ there is of course always more to come, the next thing to do, the next place to see, more people to meet and more work to do.
In Oct 2025 I moved from living with my best friend, my Dad,in Nottingham, UK to Phichit, Thailand, to teach Kindergarten.
This blog will hopefully help those in the UK that are struggling to see a happy, peaceful and content life in the UK, for themselves and their family. It will help you connect to other possibilities in life.
OR you might just fancy a holiday and this blog can help youunderstand life in Thailand and give you hints and tips for travelling, particularly if your thinking of visiting Bangkok; a great place to be.
OR if you’re a fellow Early Years/Kinder Teacher, I intend for a lot of this blog to cover the amazing experience of teaching in a different system to the UK, what it’s like, safeguarding differences, conceptual differences in idea’s of discipline and care. I hope you gain some insight and that helps you to see the many perspectives of education we have globally.
